Colleens Win on the Road

cwbl14jun-10The Colleens traveled to Rockford to take on the Starfires on Saturday, June 14, to play the first league game at Beyer Field since 1954.

After an opening ceremony that featured former AAGPBL player Helen “Sis” Waddell  and bat girl Charlene O’Brien throwing out the first pitches, the two teams squared off under beautiful skies. Rockford catcher Jory made a nice defensive play on a foul pop to retire the first batter to get her team off to a good start. The second batter, Amy, worked a walk, stole second and then scored on Shae’s single to give the Colleens the early lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Shae struck out the side. 1-0 Colleens after one.

After a scoreless second, the Colleens added to their lead with a run in the third and two more in the fourth, thanks to hits by KristenSophia(double)and Amy. Rockford shutdown the rally with a nifty -7-4-2 play at the plate. The Starfires looked to get at least one back in the bottom half, with a runner on second and one out, but Shae shut it down with a strikeout and a grounder to cap off an impressive four inning pitching performance of 8 strikeouts, 0 walks and 2 hits. After 4, Colleens 4, Starfires 0.

The fifth was a big inning for the Colleens, as they plated 11 runs. Offensive highlights included hits by Morgan, Amy, Shae (double), and Zoe, with a sacrifice fly by Rita. The Starfires came out battling in the bottom half off the inning, loading the bases with one out to greet new pitcher Rita. After confirming that the Colleens did not have anyone warming up in the bullpen, Rita bore down and induced an infield fly for out number two, then struck out the next batter. After 5, Colleens lead 15-0.

Rockford finished the game strong, scoring 3 in the sixth (two runs driven in by Danielle’s double) and holding the Colleens scoreless in the sixth and seventh, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the big lead. Final Colleens 15, Starfires 3, in a fun game at Beyer Field.
