The CWBL season got off to a great start with a well-played game between the Riveters and Colleens at Harper College on Sunday, June 8. Riveters lead-off hitter Yumi rapped a single to start the game and later scored to give her team the early lead. In the bottom of the inning, the toughest out in the CWBL, Annie, led off with a double and then scored on a Zoe single to tie the game. The Colleens grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second as Annie drove in rookie Waffle. The lead was short-lived, as the Riveters staged a two out rally when Rita walked and Amy and Flor  hit back-to-back singles in the top of the third. After a quiet fourth, the Colleens scored two in the fifth when Waffle drove home Mara and Christine and were threatening to score more until Annabelle tracked down a liner at second and doubled up the runner at first for the first double-play of the season. Annabelle’s heroics continued in the top of the sixth when she drove home Yumi with the tying run. The Colleens shut down the scoring threat with a nice play at the plate to throw out the go ahead run. In the bottom of the sixth, Kim worked a walk to lead off the inning and then Annie stroked her fourth hit of the game to give the Colleens two runners on, no outs, with the heart of the order coming up. A strikeout and a walk later, Heather strode to the plate and whacked a worm burning grounder past the third baseman to give her team the lead. The Riveters escaped further damage by turning a nifty 1-2-3 double play to end the inning. After six, the score is Colleens 5, Riveters 4. Colleens’ hurler Shae finished strong with a 1-2-3 seventh for a complete game win with six strikeouts.
