Red Takes Final Series in Three Games

Blue was ready to go in this doubleheader, and jumped out ahead in the bottom of the first, with the middle of the order stringing together some hits to drive in 3 runs. Red third baseman Jess ended the inning with a nice play on a tough grounder. Red answered in the same fashion in the second, helped by a double from Heather. Blue defense quickly shut down the rally, however, with an unconventional 4-6-3-2 double play to end the inning with the score tied. Blue added 1 in each of the next two innings, but stranded three runners in the fourth. Red tied the game again at 5 on a bases-loaded double from Annie in the top of the fifth. Joelle, in her end-of-season pitching debut, held Blue to 1 run in the bottom of the inning. But Blue blew the game open in the sixth when Penny led off with a walk and Maria, Elizabeth, Kelly and Daya each hit solid singles to drive in 4. Red added 1 in the bottom of the inning, but the damage was done, and Blue took the second game of the series 10-6 in seven innings.

For once, the weather was mighty fine in Bedford Park, and Val led the league-wide snacking effort before the start of the rubber match. The pace of the second game was decidely slower, the players having become complacent about the sunshine. Each team allowed walks in the first, and runners came around to score and even the game at 1. Blue loaded the bases with two outs but couldn’t bring anyone home. After a scoreless second, things started coming up Blue in the bottom of the third after a leadoff single by Yumi, who came around to score on a single by Christine and would finish the day with six runs. Peggy Sue walked and scored on a single by Val. Red came back with a vengeance in the fourth, when Christina sparked a 5-run rally with a lead-off single. Walks loaded the bases for Jess, who hit a bomb to left field to drive in all 3 runs and scored on a 2-RBI single by Tracy. Christine hit a bases-loaded double of her own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, and it remained tied after each team added 1 run in the fifth. Rain clouds began to threaten, but Red would be stopped by hell or high water. Or, as it turned out, the Blue team. Red added another 4 runs in the sixth, thanks to hits from Annie and Amy and yet another double by Jess, and after a scoreless seventh won the game by a score of 11-7 as well as the series.
