Game 5: Blue Defeats Red 8-2 to Claim Second Series

Red jumped out to an early lead in the first when Yumi doubled and scored on a single by Penny. But Blue answered quickly, adding three of their own in the second half of the inning on a bases-clearing triple from Zoe. The real story, however, was pitching. Blue pitchers Peggy Sue, Kellie and Zoe combined for 13 strikeouts—likely a CWBL record, say statisticians. For their part, Red pitchers Heather, Tracy and Penny added another 10 K’s, but a few errors and a few walks put too many baserunners on for Blue, who never looked back after taking the early lead. Annie hit a double in the second and added another run for Blue. She would go 3 for 3 with two walks and four runs scored. With two on in the fourth, Red third baseman Maria made a nice play on a ground ball and roped it to first, getting an out and freezing the runners at second and third, but Zoe knocked them both in on a double moments later. She scored on an error, and finished the day one long ball away from hitting for the cycle. Blue tacked on another run in the eighth to win it 8-2.
