Red Over Blue 10-9 in Season Opener

The Blue Team jumped out to an early lead, stringing a few hits together in the first, including a double by Heather and a rocket off the bat of Sofi that cruised out to center field for a home run. The Red Team came right back in the bottom of the inning, answering Blue’s 4 runs with 3 of its own, helped by back-to-back doubles by Christine and Zoe. After a scoreless second, Blue plated 3 runs and were poised to score more, but Red turned a nifty 6-4-3 double play to end the threat, then scored 2 in their half. Blue led 7-5 after three innings. Tracy gave the Red team a solid five innings of relief pitching, allowing only 2 runs, while her team chipped away at Blue’s early lead to tie the game game at 8-8 after six. Blue quickly regained the lead in the seventh, but Red’s defense rose to the occasion and turned an unconventional 6-4-3-2 double play to end the inning. Fired up by her defense, Tracy tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a worm-burning grounder between third and short. Blue went down 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth, while Red failed to take advantage of a leadoff walk as tensions mounted. Amy came in to work the final inning for Red and induced three consecutive ground ball outs. Two walks put runners on for Red in the bottom of the ninth. Tracy stepped to the plate with one out and rapped a single to left, and Zoe motored around third to score the winning run. Final score: Red 10, Blue 9. Blue hitters Annie, Marsha and Minda each had two hits on the day, as did Red’s Val and Tracy. Heather struck out seven for Blue in her pitching debut. A close game and a walk-off hit—what a way to start the season!
